Memphis CPSA is pleased to present a 2 day workshop which demonstrates the use of graphite with colored pencil on Claybord by instructor Amy Lindenberger, CPSA. Learn to make a soft focus landscape with light and drama by using the darks and lights that can be created with this technique.

Soft Focus Landscapes on Claybord Colored pencil is known for being very detail-oriented, but not so much for its painterly qualities. This technique uses powdered graphite, followed by layers of colored pencil, graphite and solvent, to create a finished product with the look of a painting that can be varnished and framed without glass!
In this workshop you will learn how Amy works with graphite combined with colored pencil to achieve a landscape that is soft and provides an emotional impact. Amy will explain how she initially applies the graphite to the Claybord and how to use colored pencil, solvent and more graphite to produce a soft color and add depth to your picture.

Soft Focus Landscapes on Claybord
Provided by Instructor
· 8" x 10" Ampersand Claybord (Amy can provide for $5 each with advance notice)
· Gloves - rubber, vinyl, cotton, etc.
· Sheet of wax-free graphite transfer paper
· Powdered graphite
· 1" (approx.) foam brush
· Workable fixative
· Clean scraps of newsprint paper
· Golden Archival Mineral Spirit Acrylic Aerosol with UVLS in a gloss finish
Provided by Student
· 8" x 10" Ampersand Claybord (if not purchasing from Amy)
· Two sheets of newspaper
· Ball point pen
· Scotch tape
· Kneaded eraser
· Staedtler Mars Plastic eraser (either white or black) or similar
· TuffStuff by Papermate eraser (1/8" diameter plastic eraser in a pen-type holder) or similar
· Tissues (6 – 8 plus)
· Drafting or other soft brush for removal of eraser crumbs
· HB pencil or #2 mechanical pencil
· 9B pencil, woodless recommended but any type will do (if you can’t find this, bring a 5B or softer pencil)
· Three to six cotton swabs or make-up applicators, or 1-2 paper blending stumps
· Prismacolor Premier (NOT Scholar) pencils (other artist-grade, soft lead pencils can be substituted, but I am not able to list specific color matches for them):

*Additional colors may be useful for final layers so feel free to bring any others you have*
· Dull plastic knife or cut up credit card for scraping
Solvent: Weber’s Odorless Turpenoid or Gamblin’s Gamsol (NOT Turpenoid Natural, Citrasolv, Zest It) Fine line permanent black, gray or brown marker (such as Sharpie or Micron)
· Prismacolor Verithin pencil, any bright color (for transferring line drawing to board)
· Tombo Mono Zero eraser for smallest details –cylindrical or rectangular type
Fine grit sandpaper,
Fine Steel Wool, Other brands of artist quality soft lead colored pencils
