August Meeting in Memphis

This month the Memphis CPSA group met and had a group critique session and discussed the CPSA convention. During the convention there are a lot of door prizes and raffles for the convention attendees. Well they had so many contributions this year that they gave me 2 extra bags of goodies to take back to the group to use. So we used some the items this month for door prizes. Everyone that attended the meeting was able to pick out 2 door prizes! In the first photo, you can see some of the members looking through the items and trying to decide what they wanted to pick out.

After we were updated on the upcoming changes with CPSA and discussed the convention, the group had a critique session for the members who brought some of their current works in progress.

Our September meeting will be held the first Saturday at the usual meeting place, St. Francis of Assisi on Germantown Rd. We will be finalizing our plans for the 2 art shows that we will have in October and December. More door prizes will be given away! Hope to see everyone there and bring what you are working on if you want a critique or just to show what you are working on.

June Critique Session

Our June meeting was held June 4th, 2011. We had our usual business meeting, where we discussed our upcoming art shows at the end of this year. So be sure and get busy working on some new artwork for the art shows! Also, I just wanted to share a couple of photos of a member critique from the meeting. After our wonderful portrait workshop in April, with Toni James, member Gus Staub started his own portrait of one of his grandchildren. Shown are Gus, Susan and Janice giving Gus some good feedback on his portrait in progress.

We do not have a meeting in July because of the July 4th holiday. Have a good summer and spend those hot afternoons and evenings drawing some new work for our show!

Toni James Workshop in Memphis!

This past weekend, our CPSA chapter held a workshop with Toni James. Toni is a wonderful portrait artist and agreed to come to Memphis to teach us her portrait techniques. It was a great experience and I believe that everyone came away happy from this workshop. So a big thank you to Toni for coming to Memphis!
Here are some photos from the workshop. If you missed it, you should really try to make it to one of Toni's workshops if you want to learn alot about portraits and working on Uart paper.

February Chapter Meeting

Our next meeting will be at 10:00 AM in Room 111 of the Family Life Center at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church at 8151 Chimneyrock Blvd. on Saturday February 5, 2010.

This meeting will be a Supply Discussion about art materials. Bring any supplies or samples of what you have been using to produce your art to share with the group. Also, Sharri, from Sharri’s Discount Arts (3517 Southern, right at the RR tracks) will be there to demonstrate and talk about some of the art supplies they have available in their store. She may have some things with her that we can purchase, so if you need some art supplies, come prepared. It’s fun to try new and different things. It might be just the inspiration that you need. This should be a very interesting and informative program, so don’t miss it!

Our August meeting will be Saturday, the 7th, from 10 AM to noon in Room 112 of the Family Life Center at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church at 8151 Chimneyrock Blvd. Gus will be teaching a mini workshop on composing your artwork. Bring your pencils and anything else you want to work with. We will all work on Mylar (we will have some there you can use) from the same photograph and each use mat board corners to select your own unique composition from it.

The Memphis Chapter of the Colored Pencil Society of American recently held their annual Christmas get together in the beautiful home of our President, Carla Sexton. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner with homemade chicken pot pie along with several dishes prepared by members of the group. The group held the traditional art exchange of small colored pencil artworks, shown in the photo above.

Mr. Ogle was our tour guide on our Chapter tour of downtown Memphis a few months ago. This portrait of Mr. Ogle was on display at our annual Colored Pencil show at the A2H in Lakeland, Tennessee during the months of October through November.

The Memphis Chapter held its annual Colored Pencil Art Show at A2H Architectural Firm in Lakeland, TN this year. The artists reception was held on the first evening of the show. Our visiting workshop artist, Linda Wesner, was the judge for this years exhibition. Linda did a wonderful job choosing from all of the beautiful art in the show.

Linda Wesner Workshop

The Memphis Chapter of CPSA hosted a colored pencil workshop last Saturday and Sunday to go along with the opening of the annual group show at the A2H architectural firm. Linda Wesner was the instructor for the workshop and the judge for the show.

The workshop was very informative and enjoyed by several colored pencil artists. The group enjoy learning about Linda's ideas on landscapes, composition, and artistic expression with colored pencils.

CPSA Award Winners 2009

I'm just back from the 2009 CPSA convention and exhibition where I was privileged to represent the Memphis Chapter at the Presidents forum that met with the CPSA board of Directors and with each other to discuss Chapter ideas and National News. I filled in for our President and enjoyed learning about what goes on in the background.

I also enjoyed seeing the beautiful Colored Pencil artwork that is on display at the Hudkins Center for the Arts in Duluth, Georgia. The winners are shown on the CPSA website here: http://www.cpsa.org/GALLERY/WINNERS2009/AG2009.html

June Meeting in Downtown Memphis

We had a presentation at the Cotton Museum, a guided walking tour of some Memphis architecture, shopping at Rivertown Gallery, and then lunch at the Majestic. It was a very enjoyable.

Walking Tour of Downtown Memphis

June Meeting

June 6th, the Memphis Chapter will meet downtown Memphis for their June meeting. The group will be touring and photographing architecture in downtown Memphis. This would be a great time to get references for a new piece for the group show at the A2H Architecture Firm in October. The group will meet at the entrance of the Cotton Museum which is at Union and Front Street. The walking tour will be guided by historian Jimmy Ogle. There will be no charge for the guided tour.

Mr. Ogle will give a short presentation at 10:00, then the walking tour along some interesting areas of downtown Memphis.

Check the Colored Pencil Society of America blog for information about reservations for the convention in Atlanta. The convention Hotel is the Marriott Atlanta at Gwinneth Place.

April Meeting at the Brooks Museum

The Memphis group met at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art today, April 4th. They enjoyed viewing the Quilt Exhibit and the pretty gardens outside.

Plans are being finalized for the colored pencil workshop and exhibit that our Chapter will host this fall. Plans were also made to schedule a guest demonstrator for our May meeting and a field trip in June, to take pictures of the interesting architecture in downtown Memphis. More details will be included in our next newsletter.

This blog will be for our chapter news and artist spotlights. Those of you who are members of our chapter may want to bookmark this page and I will send out emails whenever I post an update. If you choose to, you may sign up for a Blogger account (free) and set up a profile and follow the blog easily. If you have a blog or website, please let me (Beth) know so I can create a link to it on the sidebar. You will find my email in the Chapter Directory.

At our March Chapter meeting, we met at the home of member, Juanita and Loren Reed. The group had pizza and delicious desserts provided by Juanita and other members. After our business meeting, we watched the CD of the National CPSA Exhibition from last years show in Seattle. We also had our annual art exchange between members who wanted to participate. Here is a picture of the group holding the colored pencil art that they received in the exchange.

Our April meeting will be held at the Brooks Art Gallery at 10:00.
